Puerto Rico Eco-Tourism Travel
Hoteles
Puerto Rico is three hours away.
All major airlines travel to San Juan. Puerto Rico is a U.S.
territory, American citizens do not need a passport or a visa.
High season runs from mid-December through mid-April.
Puerto Rico is approximately 100
miles east to west by 30 miles north to south. The island allows
you to fill your schedule easily. Swim a Blue Bay, Hike a Rain
Forest and Snorkel off an island.
1) Laguna Grande, Mosquito Bay. Home to thousands of
single-celled bioluminescent dinoflagellates - tiny plantlike
organisms that glow neon-blue when disturbed. On moonless nights,
they provide the only source of light in the bay.
2) El Yunque Rain Forest
is the only tropical rain forest in the U.S. National Forest
System. More than 100 billion gallons of rain fall each year on
the 28,000 acres of El Yunque. Everything seems bigger, wetter,
louder and more pungent in the rain forest even the iguanas.
There are 13 hiking trails across
the national park and it's home to more than 240 different kind of
trees, orchids, tiny coqui and the cotorra, the endangered green
parrot of Puerto Rico.
3) Culebra Island (sister island of Vieques) You can cath a
90-minute ferry ride from Fajardo to Dewey, the only town on one
of Puerto Rico's most popular snorkeling sites, Culebra island.
At Culebra Divers, you can rent gear for $12.00, and catch a $2
bus ride to Flamenco Beach.
There is no place quite like a tropical volcanic island, and no
island in the Caribbean quite like Puerto Rico. The geography of
the island is very unusual, as it encompasses distinctly different
kinds of topography and microclimates in a relatively small area.
Puerto Rico Travel:
STILL BEAUTIFUL AND AFFORDABLE
By Proferor Martin N. Danenberg
“El Quijote del GED”
Puerto Rico is a jewel in the Caribbean that is rich in history
and culture. I was amazed to see the growth that has taken place
since my last visit in the mid 1980’s. There has been a lot of
construction and it is progressing, as other places have
progressed. I am sure many Puerto Ricans and tourists lament the
construction and the changes,
but Puerto Rico still is Puerto
Rico. I found a people still kind and caring. I can still recall
Puerto Ricans, even women, offering this American tourist a seat
on public buses in the 1980’s and I noticed that the people still
care. While getting information on the street about my short trip
to Bayamón, several people were actively helping me and others
watched to make sure that all was going well. I took the bus to
Bayamón, but returned on the new Metro. As I waited on the
platform of the Metro, I could see the beautiful landscape of
Puerto Rico in the distance. I think you can have a great time
exploring the island and the area around San Juan. Bus rides were
as little as twenty-five cents and the Metro costs $1.50
In the Miramar section you can eat in many restaurants serving
Puerto Rican food. Often the owners and staff are Dominicans who
have moved there. Try the typical pork, chicken, and seafood
dishes with rice and beans of mashed plantains (mofongo). I had
the chicharrones de pollo (chicken pieces) and skipped the rice
and beans, substituting a large portion of fried plantains
(bananas). Dinner with a diet coke cost only $8.50 and there is no
tax. You will be equally pleased with the steaks. Even along
Ashford Avenue in the Condado section you can find good
restaurants that are inexpensive.
I walked the streets of Miramar every day, usually walking into
the Condado. The walk along the lagoon was something new and
special. You can walk around the lagoon in slightly over an hour.
I visited the Luis Muñoz Rivera Park. Puerto Rico is much more
than the main streets of Isla Verde and the Condado. You can put
Puerto Rico on your list of places to visit. And at night you can
hear wonderful Spanish songs in the lounge of the Caribe Hilton.
Enjoy one of your favorite drinks and be entertained by the
vocalists there.
Take off your shirt and enjoy Puerto Rico!
